Improving sound quality in tank models

I like the tank engine sound in my Tamiya Leopard 2A6 and KV-85 tanks but decide to improve a sound quality.

In my KV-85 I simply exchange the original small Tamiya speaker to big Visaton 10 cm speaker with very good bass reproduction.


Tamiya Leopard 2A6 electronics have unfortunately small built in amplifier, so decide to use external amplifier supplied from 12V. This voltage is taken from step up converter (7.2V to 12V) . I exchanged the speaker also and drilled some holes in tank upper hull (over the speaker, later covered by grid imitation- 1,2,3).

Now both tanks sounding much better.

Now both tanks sounding much better.

Did you think about using 2nd battery with nessesary voltage? For Ni-Mh it might be rather big load to power both engines and powerful speaker.

Yes,I was using second battery before, but later decide to use those step up converter. Now I have to charge only the one battery for one tank. I can set the volume in Tamiya DMD at 30% only and its quite enough. In the begining I was using standard Tamiya Leo 2A6 4 ohm speaker, the engine sound was too loud - in addition setting volume to 100% cause some distorsions in output signal. I couldnt find amplifier with 4 ohm output and 7,2V supply, Benedini ofers 6W /7-12V amplifier but with 8 ohm output. So I decide to increase supply voltage to 12V.
